On Saturday July 16th, thirty-six golfers from four area ski clubs participated in the 6th annual Ski Kouncil of Illinois (SKI) Golf Outing. Representing Champaign were Randy and Judy Haydel, Tony and Deb Curcio, Ralph and Eileen Jurutka, Joe Debarr and Ted Jeurissen. The format again was best ball, to the delight of many, which enabled the beginner, intermediate and experienced golfers to play together and contribute to their team score. Each foursome was assembled in accordance with ability and no more than two ski club members from the same club. The cost was $46 and included 18 holes of golf with electric cart, a bucket of balls, two free drink tickets and a chance to win prizes.

We were all expecting hot sunny, humid weather, but were delighted when the sky was overcast most of the day and accompanied by a slight breeze. Towards the end of the day the sun came out and we were quickly reminded what the weather in mid-July can be like.

Prairie Vista Golf Course proved to be a step up from Highland Park Golf Course, where SKI had previously held their golf outings. The course is longer with plenty of obstacles to steer clear of, like more sand traps, water, and uncut prairie. The golf course has relatively few trees (it’s a young course) and sits on top of a hill that overlooks area farmland. The view is actually quite stunning, although it will not remind you of skiing out West.

After golf, the group made its way to the Gill Street Sports Bar in Bloomington, where we met up with Mike Metz and Anja Kohl. Rather than playing traditional golf, Mike and Anja decided to check out two area disc golf courses.

There were several prizes given away for men’s and women’s longest drive (Eileen Jerutka crushed her drive farther than the men), closest to the pin, longest putt and lowest overall score. Fortunately for most people, door prizes were given away by SKI, including two $100 gift certificates good towards the next SKI winter trip to Mammoth Mountain in California.

The annual golf event is used as an opportunity to introduce ski club members to other SKI club members and to promote the 2012 SKI winter trip to Mammoth. The trip will include round trip airfare, six nights lodging at the Mammoth Mountain Inn (ski-in/ski-out) with hot breakfast and nightly happy hours, five days of lift tickets including June Mountain, and bus transfers. There will be 2 transportation options. Prices are $1,395 for air from O’Hare to Reno then bus to Mammoth. Or for $1,464, you can choose to fly all the way from St. Louis to LA to Mammoth. More information will be available at the trip signup.

Special thanks to Bloomington/Normal Ski Club member Carol Drake, who organized the SKI golf event. See you next year!
