2010 ANNUAL SKI GOLF OUTING PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday July 24th, 44 golfers from 5 area ski clubs participated in the 5th annual Ski Kounsel of Illinois (SKI) Golf Outing. Representing Champaign were Randy and Judy Haydel, John Gentry, Tony and Deb (first time golfer) Curcio, Ralph and Eileen Jurutka, Bob Morris and as a last minute fill-in, Ted Jeurissen. The format was best ball, thank goodness so that beginner, intermediate and experienced golfers could play together and contribute to their team score. Each foursome was determined by ability and no more than 2 ski club members from the same club. The cost was $29 with a gas cart, but if you walked the course it was only $20! All in all it was a pretty cheap day of golf.

The weather started out beautiful. The wind had a slight breeze and the sky was mostly sunny for most of the day. However towards the end of the day the sky got dark, the wind picked up and rain started to fall. The course rangers sounded the sirens to alert golfers to take cover. Some groups answered the call and 1 or 2 groups continued in a light rain. All in all, there were 3 foursomes that had their day cut short by a hole or two.

Highland Park Golf Course is relatively short in length, but presented many challenges due to the narrow fairways created by its mature trees and elevated greens creating many uphill shots. The course was in great shape in spite of several days of dry, hot weather.

After golf, the group met at The Gill Street Inn in Bloomington. There were several prizes given away for men’s and women’s longest drive, closest to the pin and longest putt. Fortunately for most people, there were luck (door) prizes given away by SKI.

The annual event is used as an opportunity to introduce ski club members to members of other SKI clubs and to promote the 2011 SKI winter trip to beautiful Lake Tahoe. The trip includes: round trip airfare, 7 nights lodging at the Embassy Suites (walking distance to the lifts at Heavenly) with breakfast and nightly happy hours, 5 days of lift tickets including Heavenly and Kirkwood and TBD, and bus transfers. Final details, including price are still being worked out, but our goal is to keep the cost of the trip at less than $1350.

Special thanks go out to Bloomington/Normal Ski Club member Joanna Dill, who organized the SKI event. See you next year!

It's been the best winter for local cross country skiing in a long time. I believe our first outing was Saturday. Jan. 9.  Seven of us, three from The Water Buffalos running club --Judy Tolliver, Stacey, and Laura -- and Richard McClary, Sue Ellen Finkenbiner, Anja Kohl, and me from CSC braved the single digit temps to do a loop around Homer Lake. It was one of Richard's first times and using my extra {garage sale} equipment he was struggling a bit. It was just him and I and a bunch of very hardy women who were leaving us farther and farther behind. I coaxed him on by saying "Richard, these women may leave us out here to die if we don't get moving!" It seemed to help and he kept up the rest of the way even though we got off of a real trail and did some bushwhacking (true x-country skiing): it was a great day.

Anyone Can Ski WINNERS! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Linda Johnson
Saturday, 21 November 2009 14:12

On November 10, the Champaign Ski Club Board reviewed the applications for the Anyone Can Ski program.  We agreed that all of the applicants were deserving of a trip to Winter Park!  We then made the decision to support two disabled skiers on the trip this year instead of just one.  The winners were selected by a random drawing.

Our first winner is Allison Potts (right) from Champaign.  Allison is 11 ½ years old.  She has been involved in all kinds of activities such as swimming, horseback riding and dancing to strengthen her muscles but has never had the opportunity to go skiing. She is looking forward to learning to ski, starting with the “sit ski”.  Her dad, Mike, will be traveling with her.  They both agree that the train ride will be “awesome”.

Our second winner is Taylor Morefield (left) from Mahomet.  Taylor is 15 years old and has skied once before on a bi-ski.  She said she would absolutely love the opportunity go to skiing again.  Her goal is to learn the mono-ski.  She feels it will challenge her more and give her more speed.  Taylor is active in wheel chair basket ball and will be participating in wheel chair track this year.  Taylor will be traveling with her dad, Jerry.

Congratulations to Allison and Taylor!!
