What a perfect weather day we had on Saturday, July 13th, when forty-four golfers from four area ski clubs teed off as they participated in the 8th annual Ski Kouncil of Illinois (SKI) Golf Outing at the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, IL. Representing Champaign were Tony and Deb Curcio, Ralph and Eileen Jurutka, Dan Pope, new member Ron Webb and Libby Johnston. Also, Mike and Anja Metz joined us for dinner after playing disc golf at one of Bloomington-Normal’s area courses.

The golf format again was best ball, to the delight of many, which enabled the beginner, intermediate and experienced golfers to play together and contribute to their team score. Each team was required to use at least one drive from each team member on the front nine and the back nine. Foursomes were assembled in accordance with ability with no more than 2 ski club members from the same club. The cost was $48 and included 18 holes of golf with an electric cart, a bucket of balls, two free drink tickets, and a chance to win prizes.

Middle Fork Vermilion River - 8 June 2013 PDF Print E-mail

CSAC paddlers on the Middle Fork Vermilion RiverOn Saturday, June 8, eight of us enjoyed a near perfect day on the Middle Fork Vermilion River from the Higginsville bridge to Kickapoo State Recreation Area. Along for the fun were Randy and Judy Haydel, Phil Johnson, Richard McClary, Paul Tenczar, Steve Elkins, Anja Metz and me. This is the most popular section of the river, the section declared a National Wild and Scenic River, and the section most of the rental boat companies use.

Fortunately, river traffic wasn't too thick. Someone must have declared this day as "Turtle Day" because we observed dozens of turtles. Mostly map turtles I believe, but also a few soft shells, and painteds. We also saw a few snakes. I only saw one in the water and it was trying to bite my canoe. Several people had their dogs along and Anja and I felt guilty for leaving Reesey behind. We stopped at a nice rock bar for lunch and Anja gathered more rocks for our yard. {Do we need more rocks? Why is the cooler so heavy? Oh! It's full of rocks! I'm so glad the rocks are cold. My drink isn't!} Does anyone feel sorry for me? Augh! That's what I thought. I enjoy the river at a slightly lower level like today. We have to dodge logs and shallow spots, and really read the river.

Paddlers on Big Walnut CreekFinally!!! Everything came together and we made it to paddle Big Walnut Creek near North Salem, IN. Sunday, June 2, six of us met in Ogden and made the hundred mile journey. Present were Randy & Judy Haydel, Eric Libner, Anja, me, and all the way from Maroa, IL, Tim White, president of the Mackinaw Canoe Club.

We put in near North Salem and immediately marveled at the beauty of the thick wooded shoreline and the sandstone lined banks as well as high bluffs and rocky cliffs. This creek has something for nearly everyone!
